Bloemfontein is the capital of this province which features monuments and museums that testify to a pioneering past. This town originated at a spring which at various times was a source of water for Bushman hunters, Sotho farmers, Voortrekkers and enormous herds of game. Today it has developed into a prosperous commercial and industrial city.
Outside this judicial capital there are exquisite sites to be visited in the Free State, for example the Golden Gate in the Highlands National Park and the Basotho Cultural Village, where the customs and traditions of the South Sotho people can be seen on the way to Qwaqwa.
